Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
